I actually love the my Magellan 3250. This Magellan 4250 was a gift for my daughter for her birthday. We used it for a roadtrip one Saturday and found that the maps are very outdated. I first emailed Magellan about the problem and got no satisfaction. Then I called them and was told to fax my receipt and they would send me a disk with updated maps, which I did. After a week I didn't hear anything, so I called again and was then told to email my receipt, which I did. I received an email two days later telling me that I was not eligible to receive an updated map disk because it was beyond my 30 days of purchase. All of my contacts except for the last phone call were before the 30 days, so had they acted on my request the first or second time I would have been eligible to receive the disk with the 2008/2009 maps. In order to get a 2008/2009 updated map disk I will now have to pay between $80 and $100.

I purchased the Magellan Maestro 4250 just over 3 months ago, and have only used it 5 times since my purchase. During this past weekend the screen froze up, but the problem was quickly resolved with a phone call to Magellan customer service.

Unfortunately, 2 days later on the return trip the unit froze up again and the problem wasn't able to be solved. I followed the myriad of steps listed on thier website in hopes of fixing the problem to no avail. According to the website, the final step is to request a repair order from Magellan, which I did via internet. Magellan never responded.

So I called Magellan customer service who stepped me through the troubleshooting procedure once more. It didn't work. The rep told me that I needed to submit my receipt, customer id number, and transaction number via fax or mail to the company so they can issue a repair order.

Once they issue the repair order, the product can be sent in. I personally feel that this is too many steps to go through to get an item repaired... after all, I am on their record since the day I purchased the item. If I was a truck driver or someone that relied on having a working GPS with 'em, I'd be very upset about their repair policy and time that it requires to submit and repair the item.

From what I've now seen, the frozen screen problem is extremely common. The company should have recalled the units and repaired them before allowing them to be sold.

When the product works, it's great! It's been extremely accurate and fairly quick on recalculating routes. The problem is that the only thing you can really rely on is that the screen WILL freeze and become unusable.

If I had it to do all over again, I'd go with a Garmin.

why would you want to buy a gps where you have to fumble with it when you have to do turns?

When it nears a turn or series of turns, it zooms in so much you cannot even see the upcoming turn, just a straight line. If it is a series of turns you have no idea what is coming next. Very frustrating in a genuinely new area.

In the freeway does not show left or right sometimes, says go straight in 5 miles and just before says do right, when it is too late.

Same behaviour as in my 4 year old Magellan!!

This was my first GPS unit and I have been delighted at my selection. I even use it when I go places that I know where I'm going. I did a lot of research prior to making my decision and I couldn't of been more pleased. The main thing for me is that it finds satellites very quickly and recalculates routes in an instant. It lets you know when a turn is coming and makes a noise prior to arriving at the intersection. And while driving at night when you can't see the street signs it will call out the name of the street.

The only disappointment I suppose is that it comes w/ the 2007 map loaded and I need to purchase the 2008/2009 map upgrade to have the latest map.

But overall i am very pleased.
