The Whistler DE1740 laser radar detector offers all-band protection--meaning it detects all available radar, laser, and safety radar systems--making it a great fit for anyone who spends a ton of time on the highway. The device scans the X, K, and Ka Superwide radar bands, the three standard bands used by most radar guns, while also watching out for VG-2 police surveillance equipment, which officers use to locate drivers with radar detectors. Thanks to the VG-2 cloaking technology, the detector is virtually invisible to officers on the road. The DE1740 also boasts Whistler's 360-degree Total Perimeter Protection, which detects signals from every angle to eliminate gaps in your protection. Wherever and whenever you drive, rest assured that the DE1740 is on the job. And to ensure that your eyes never leave the road ahead, the detector offers an easy-to-understand RealVoice function, which updates you when an alarm sounds with real-time voice alerts. Adding to the detector's value is its compatibility with the Safety Warning System, which makes long commutes quicker and more efficient by alerting the driver to upcoming road or weather hazards. The Safety Warning System, which is available in select communities, identifies and displays 60 unique voice messages in the following categories: highway construction and maintenance, highway hazard zones, weather threats, travel information and convenience, and fast or slow moving vehicles. To prevent the detector from sounding false alarms when traveling through dense urban areas--which are often overrun with automatic door openers, intrusion alarms, and other devices that can trigger the detector--the DE1740 includes three city modes and a highway mode. The city modes are less sensitive to outside interference, reducing the likelihood of a false reading. Once you're out on the open road, simply switch to the highway mode to enjoy the unit's full functionality. Additional features include a pivoting display that provides topnotch visibility with little glare; an easy-to-understand voice alert that lets you keep your eyes on the road ahead; an intuitive icon-based LED interface; instant-on detection for radar guns with "pulse" signals; and a vehicle battery-saver mode. I bought it thinking of it as a cheep reminder to slow down. But its been the best investment iv ever bought just make sure your not leading the pac of road warriors and youll be well informed of when and how foar a speed trap is.

As a fan of the whistler products, I bought the 1740 as a birthday present to myself. I've had BEL's and Passport's and even a Uniden detector, and for the money you cannot find a more solid detector than a whistler. On the highway detection is fantastic and around town in the city mode, the unit works near flawlessly. This machine is a big bang for the buck!!!

I bought one for myself from a wholesaler and its been a top selling item on e-bay for me ever since. What's make it different is that its speach activated. It actually talks to you. The only thing I might change is the space age look, but other than that its a good item.

Every feature is very good, but but the light indicators were faded/gone within one month. I don't know whether I got the defect item or the poor quality of indicators. So I decided to request the replacement for Amazon.com

the availability for this item is not worth the wait. i have been waiting since march 4th for this item to be sent to me but all i get is emails saying the estimate shipping date is delayed. supposedly im not getting this item till may 10th? i think. anyways im not expecting it anytime soon...
