Amazon.com Review Amazon.com Review The biggest boost yet for satellite radiohas to be Delphi's radiant MyFi XM2GO portable satellite radio receiver and digital music player. The MyFi can record and play back up to 5 hours of XM's digital programming whenever and wherever you choose. It requires a subscription to XM satellite radio ($12.95/month), but just
Compact and easy, to use the MyFi offers 150 XM satellite channels. | about everything else you could want for home, outdoor, or car listening comes in the box. XM's 150 channels include 67 commercial-free music channels as well as premier news, sports, talk, traffic, and weather listings. The MyFi comes with a densely packed carton of accessories, including everything from headphones and antennas to a remote control, belt clips, and separate docking apparatus for integrating the receiver with your home and car stereos. Smaller than a PDA, the receiver exudes greatness even before you hear it: it's just heavy enough to seem solidly built yet light enough to merit the term "portable." The receiver even comes with world-class manuals, from its tips sheet to the longer quick-start guide to the 42-page user's manual (separate English and Spanish editions of each are provided). An illuminated six-line LCD is your gateway to browsing XM's programming. You can browse by station, by category, or (our favorite) by currently playing artist. Thirty channel presets simplify access to your favorites, and a handy memo button stores artist and song data for up to 20 performances you'd like to look into later (or find again on XM). Any satellite radio system requires a fairly heavy-duty antenna. Accordingly, the MyFi comes with four: one for the home (place it in a south-facing window), one for the car (mount it on the roof or trunk), a clip-on antenna for when you're hoofing it, and a built-in antenna. Our home reception was perfect--we never experienced a single drop out. Car reception was spottier, though still excellent. You just have to get used to the fact that where analog radio gets noisier in areas with poor reception, satellite radio drops out altogether; it's either all there, crystal clear, or all absent. And that's where My XM, MyFi's recording feature, comes in handy.
The MyFi mounts easily in most vehicles. | My XM lets you record XM programming to MyFi's onboard memory--perfect for time shifting your listening (as with a news program or a scheduled performance on XM Live) or for tuning in when you'll be someplace lacking XM reception (in a canyon, on a subway, in a windowless cubicle, etc.). You can schedule a recording or start and stop recording at any time you wish, and new recordings pick up where you last stopped. But you can't erase anything unless you clear the memory--which means you can't whittle away songs you don't like to retain your favorites. It's also important to remember that when you've filled the unit's memory (128 MB, or 5+ hours of full bitrate XM radio), it'll record over earlier material, starting from the top. During playback, however, My XM lets you skip easily from track to track and even pick from a list of all tracks. You can configure the MyFi's LCD to scroll stock and sports-score tickers, a great way to keep an eye on important stats. The receiver also features a built-in sleep timer (15 minutes to 1 hour) and an alarm clock (wake to a beep or to XM programming). What's in the Box For car use, you have a choice of mounting options for the vehicle cradle: flush mount, vent mount, or swivel mount. The cradle houses a power jack for a DC vehicle power adapter (included), an antenna input, and an audio output for use with the provided cassette-shell audio adapter. You can use the cassette adapter or the MyFi's built-in wireless FM transmitter, which turns any FM radio into an XM radio. (Audio quality is better using the supplied cassette audio adapter, however. You may also purchase a wired FM adapter, though XM asserts that the cassette adapter sounds better than that, too.)
The Delphi XM MyFi comes complete with all of the accessories needed to enjoy XM anywhere. | Positioning the car antenna can be inelegant, despite its heavy-duty magnet. You can have it professionally installed or live with an exposed antenna cord, though XM recommends using "existing holes, body grommets, and other wiring channels" rather than closing a door over the cord on a daily basis. The receiver's battery pack proved good for about five hours between charges. The included earbud headphones are neither comfortable nor particularly well made; a nicer set would represent XM's strong sound quality. --Michael Mikesell Pros: - Truly portable satellite-radio receiver
- Simple setup
- Includes a wealth of accessories
- Excellent sound quality
- Great reception indoors and out
- Convenient five-hour recording mode
- Lets you skip from song to song while playing recordings
- Well-written manuals

Cons: - Car antenna tricky to arrange for permanent use

Simply Wonderful November 27, 2004 Mike (Chicago) 35 out of 38 found this review helpful
This product is perfect for someone entering the XM Satellite Radio revolution! At first, the price is a little daunting, but then you have to look at everything you get.
First, it is another plug & play receiver that you can swap between your car and home, just like the Roady and SkyFi receivers. Plus, it includes both kits for the home and the car. I honestly believe that this product is a great value for that alone, since this is one of the most advanced receivers in the market.
But, the MyFi also allows you to listen to XM on the go, which is the first of its kind. Like others have said in their reviews, this feature works best for larger cities where there is a nice repeater network in place. Plus, for those times you are in the subway or gym, you can use the XM2GO feature which works just like a Tivo. You can schedule a recording session, or as I like to do, record songs whenever I feel like it! If I am listening and hear good songs, I just hit the "XM2GO" button and the MyFi records the songs. Then, when I want to listen to these songs, I can scroll through all of the songs available and choose which one I feel like listening to. I love how the MyFi retains the artist info as it records.
Again, this may look a little pricey, but I honestly believe that this is the best money I could spend because I can already see how often I am going to use this. On a side note, I think that the XM service is incredible. I have tried Sirius, but didn't really like their programming. My favorite channel is XM200 which plays live concerts all day. Plus, XM is $3 cheaper a month which is always good in my book!
Love It! April 7, 2005 philo (N.Cal) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
Just purchased the MyFi from Amazon for $250 with their $50 off deal. I`ll skip all the details and just give my opinion of it`s performance compared with other`s opinions. I have the original Delphi SkyFi and wanted the Myfi only for the walkman like properties and so far it has lived up to my expectations. I`m sure it will get better but I give it 5 stars based on what else it out there (which for satellite radio is nothing).
I use it running, biking, skiing etc. where I want my hands free so the MyFi goes in a pocket or pack and I use the external antenna. I attached the antenna to my favorite ball cap and left it on there so it`s always ready to go. It isn`t heavy or very noticeable or hard to attach. It`s just another wire, right next to the headphone wire, coming from my head. I didn`t find it to be much of a problem as others did.
With the external antenna the reception while doing activities was flawless in open areas but was lost in thick trees. This was acceptable to me as I`m in bad reception areas only for short periods of time.I tried it without the external antenna and noticed it doesn`t like movement much but works fine in open areas in an upright static position (sitting on the beach for example).
The battery life was 6 hours on the first full discharge. The recording feature is easy to do and is just like listening to live XM. You can only program two separate recording sessions for up to five hours. Having the capability of more recording sessions would be nice (say five separate one hour sessions). And being able to download directly to a computer would be a bonus. But for now it`s the best thing going.
In addition, I use it in my second vehicle (I kept the SkyFi for my other vehicle) and it works great with the included magnetic antenna. No reception problems except in extreme canyons or very thick trees. I live in the country and don`t have any experience with it in cities. The cassette adapter sounds much better than the FM modulator. At my house, in a very thick forest, the home antenna gets three bars of reception.
In conclusion, I love it. I did not find the problems with it other people did. Buy it from Amazon and save 50 bucks thru May 1. Their customer service is great too - two days after I ordered the MSRP was lowered $50 to $299. With one e-mail request they refunded $50 with no problems. With free shipping and no sales tax they are the best deal going. And no, I don`t work for them!
Finally...The Ideal Product for Converting to XM Radio February 19, 2005 Big Halos Fan (The OC, CA United States) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
I've had my MyFi for about one month now. I won't rehash the details that are spelled out in the Amazon product description and many of the other reviews. Like many people, I was curious about Satellite Radio, and particularly XM given its more reasonable subscription service fee. But the problem was always that I wanted the option of listening to it at the 3 places where most of us spend our time: home, work and the car. If you had to by a receiver for each of those, you would have to pay about [...] month for 1 main [...] and 2 "family" ($[...]) subscriptions. That's where the MyFi comes in. Yes, it may cost about $[...] up front, but you can get by with 1 unit and 1 subscription to serve all 3 purposes, with the ADDED benefit of being able to store programming to listen to on airplane flights and other places where you cannot get reception.
The biggest debate seems to be about reception quality. First, you CAN get reception in a high-rise. I work on the 10th floor of a building and use the Home antenna at my window...it comes in at the 3 maximum signal strength. If you are unsure about your situation, find a friend who has the MyFi and borrow the unit and Home kit for a day to test it before you buy. My friend let me do that and I knew it would work at my office. As for the auto, while the instructions say to put the magnetic antenna outside the car, you can get reception on the inside if you have a sunroof. I just put my antenna up and slide the sunroof cover over to hold it and it works perfectly. For the personal antenna, it leaves a bit to be desired. If you are sitting outside in the same place (a stadium seat, a park bench, etc.) you can lock in reception and be fine. If you walk or run around, you'll notice some drop-off. I agree with the others who suggest the best option for moving as a portable is to use the record feature and buy a nice set of headphones to listen to the music. The bottom line is that with a 5 hour record feature and 5-hour battery, you can fly coast-to-coast and still be able to listen to XM Radio the entire flight with the MyFi.
I'm assuming once Delphi catches up to the demand of the MyFi, that the option for purchasing an extra Home antenna kit will be available, as well as extra batteries and so on. The product is so new that it is hard to find accessories. I just bought an extra antenna that will work on the home kit for around $30 on an auction website. That way, I can leave my Home antenna at home and use the extra for work. The MyFi is small enough to pop in my pocket and carry it around from home to car to work easily.
If you have any doubts about XM Radio, I highly recommend going to the XM website and sign up for the free 3-day internet trial (you'll need a high speed connection). The service is truly amazing. There is a station for every mood and taste, and XM creates the perfect balance of having no commercials but with a personal DJ who pops in every so often to make it feel like a real radio station. I don't care for the Music Choice DirecTV/cable channels that are so sterile with no live voice anywhere. And the DJs on some of the channels have freedom to select songs just like in the old days of FM radio before 2 corporate conglomerates bought up every radio station in most major markets and mandated playlists with the same 20 songs acceptable to focus groups.
I could not stand the LA radio market any longer, and so if you too are fed up with what your radio choices are, the MyFI with XM Radio is the perfect solution to convert. You'll love it!!
satellite radio demystified January 3, 2005 Aaron CCity (Grand Rapids, MI) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have been using the Delphi MyFi now for a few weeks on and off and have found it a huge step forward in satellite radio technology.
I will first clear up a few misconceptions of this unit:
1. Using the MyFi outside, may require the attached antenna, and the unit's antenna must have a clear view of the MAJORITY of the sky.
2. The unit will not work inside gyms, airports, houses and other buildings unless an antenna has a clear view of the sky.
3. Depending on where in the US you are located and if by chance there are ground repeaters (towers that rebroadcast the signal to areas that do not get good signal) you may have to have the antenna face a certain direction for good signal.
4. The antenna on the car kit must be on the very top of the car to get good reception (recommend professional installation for best results in the car)
Now that those are out of the way, I have to say that the MyFi is unbelievably sweet. It has 5 hours of recording time so you can get all of your favorite xm content for later use. It comes packaged with the universal car kit which allows you to connect it using the cassette adapter or use the wireless fm modulator built into the Myfi its self. The home kit is also provided to you giving you RCA connections to link to your home receiver, or you can still use the wireless fm modulator to listen to it on any radio. A small remote control is included, along with decent ear bud headphones and the wearable antenna. The price tag seems a bit high but it is actually a great deal when you compare to the next best satellite radio the Delphi Skyfi 2:
SkyFi 2: Receiver with remote 129.99 MSRP + car kit 69.99 MSRP + home kit 69.99 MSRP = a total of 269.97 MSRP
MyFi: Receiver with remote, car kit, home kit, and wearable antenna = a total cost of 349.99 MSRP
a total cost difference of only 80.02 MSRP, and for 80.02 your getting 5 hour record time instead of 30 minutes, your getting the ability to be completely portable... unlike the SkyFi2 which must be plugged into the car kit or home kit to work, also the MyFi menu system is better.

Portable XM satellite radio is HERE!!! December 17, 2004 S. Sutton (Seattle, WA) 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I've had mine now for a little over 2 weeks. I love it. It is a great all around product that I use in my car and can bring with me to the gym. I live in an area with good ground repeater coverage and can walk all around outside without any drop-outs. I cannot receive reception in the gym but that is what the 5+ hr recording feature is for. Every couple of days I record a fresh, new 5hr block of music/content. I have plenty of music, talk, etc. to listen to while I workout. And let me tell you it sure beats listening to the stuff my gym pipes through it's speakers!!
At first the MyFi does seem pricey, but when you consider you get everything for the car, home and get the portability with NOTHING else to buy, it isn't a bad price.
Ok, you so you are probably wanting to know how it compares to the iPod. First of all they are 2 completely different products.....for now. The mini-iPod is $250 and that is without ANY accesories. It comes without ANY songs on it. Say you max out the song capacity and put $1,000 ($1 a song) into it. You have now spent $1250 on the player. This content will get old and you will want to replace at least some of it with fresh material...it's an endless $$ cycle.
The MyFi for now can only hold a little over 5 hrs of music, but remember this is the 1st generation player. It is only going to increase at a rapid rate, while the size of the unit gets smaller and lighter. The next MyFi just might have a full 1G of storage or more. I also like how the MyFi can list all of your favorite sports teams scores (and of course my favorite stock ticker XMSR). It has a really nice screen display with 6 lines of text. The buttons are all well placed and it is very easy to use. EVERYONE I have shown the MyFi to has loved it. They hold it in their hand and say, "Wow, this is really cool".
Of course there are a few drawbacks on the device. Mainly not being able to delete separate song tracks. You can only delete sessions (there are 2 session blocks) You can fast-foward by song track and listen as many times as you want. But overall it is a breakthrough device that is going to change the way we all listen to content and receive data. When I think about all the possibilities now for portability it really is amazing. All the future cell phones, PDA's, Blackberrys, etc. out there will have to have sat radio built-in to compete on features.
By the way, I upgraded from a Roady2. I wanted the portability for taking it to the gym, traveling (plane). I used to have a Mp3 player but I got tired of always downloading new music to it. Once the RIAA started cracking down on P2P it just wasn't worth it.
The FM modulator in the MyFi works better than the Roady2. I can definitely tell the difference in the sound quality in my car. With the Roady2, certain stations (especially BoneYard) sounded kinda of dry and muffled. With the MyFi ALL the channels now sound equally good. Even the talk channels sound has improved. My only complaint of the Roady2 was the 2 line limit display. That drove me nuts hitting the "display" button all the time to see all the song info. With the MyFi I can see ALL the song information AND while the stock ticker scrolls at the bottom....at the SAME time!!
